GM's 4L80E overdrive automatic is the latest in a continuing legacy of rugged Turbo-Hydramatic transmissions from Chevrolet.
The TH light-duty automatic introduced in was conceived for small-block V-8s while the TH, introduced inwith its higher torque capacity was engineered to handle big-block power. At the cusp of the s, GM changed the way it designated its automatic transmissions. The R4 became the 4L60 that meant four forward speeds 4 ; and a longitudinal design L ; 60 for torque capacity, which would be a 6,pound vehicle weight rating.
When these automatics became electronically controlled in the early s, an "E" designation swiftly followed. GM took the assets of these two transmissions, the TH and the electronically controlled 4L60E, and adapted them to modern technology: electronic control and stronger internals. The 4L80E, which entered production in for trucks, was conceived on the heels of the R4 and 4L60, although it shares quite a bit with the tried-and-true TH Think of it as an overdrive TH, which means it's capable of handling gobs of torque compared to the lighter-duty automatics.
The 4L80E has gear ratios of 2. When the 4L80E was introduced, torque capacity was vehicles up to 8, pounds and engines producing up to lb-ft of torque. The uprated 4L85E, introduced inis rated for vehicles up to 16, pounds and engines producing up to lb-ft of torque. Designed and built with the best performance parts available, the four-speed Street Smart 4L80E from Performance Automatic has an improved gear ratio spread for vehicles that need the most from their transmission.

Inside the Performance Automatic 4L80E are significant improvements that add torque capacity and durability. A hardened input shaft gets you off to a good start with greater torque capacity. Performance Automatic gives the 4L80E greater pump capacity for higher volume and pressure. It fits the 4L80E with Raybestos clutches and a higher capacity intermediate band for solid hook-up.
Modifications are made to the valvebody for crisp shifts and precise shift timing. A heavy-duty sprag improves durability. A heavy-duty locking torque converter fitted with improved frictions eliminates slippage and excessive heat. Heat is a 4L80E's greatest enemy. We're building a 4L85E with uprated high-performance hard parts and frictions. The result is greater horsepower and torque capacity.
However, how power travels through this transmission is simple. We're most interested in what Performance Automatic does to give the 4L80E greater capacity. Durability comes from better clutches and rugged bands, hardened input shaft, improved sprag, and five-pinion planets. Performance Automatic begins with a hardened input shaft as a means to increasing torque capacity. Higher planet capacity is what comes next.
High-performance Raybestos clutches and bands are employed throughout the 4L80E.The world of transmissions has developed a lot over the last 20 years. One tried and true transmission, the TH, received a slight makeover into the 4L80E. We wanted to took a closer look at it. The TH was originally introduced to the General Motors platform in the s. The 4L80E came thirty years later in the s. The 4L80E has a max torque rating of lb. The gearing to move such a heavy load is a 2.
These transmissions can be found behind 4. They are electronically controlled, unless modified, and the housing itself is die-cast aluminum. Some Hummers also ran them as well. Mind you, this transmission can also be converted to be a full manual gearbox as well. The transmission is also slightly larger than a TH as the overall length is 32 inches; 1. Another aspect to note is the transmission cooler lines. Early versions had them side by side, but later versions had one moved further back in the housing.
There are a lot of different ways to go about acquiring one of these transmissions. The easiest and most expensive route is to buy a brand new or rebuilt one off the shelf. These can be purchased through several different companies that normally offer a warranty on them. However, the price can go through the roof for a brand new transmission. Alternatively, you could go on Craigslist and pick up a used one, hoping that it works as great as the seller tells you it does.
Use your best judgement in these cases. Another option is to search for a core at the local yard, or even better your local dismantler and spend hours finding one and pulling it out. This would be a cost effective way of sourcing one, but it would most likely need to be rebuilt. In our search for one, we came across Just Chevy Trucksa place that takes Chevy trucks and dismantles them in Maine. It's rated at RWHP This was our first HP transmission offered at PerformaBuilt.
We start with only late model cores for our performance line and application based core for our heavy duty line Heavy Hauler. Each of these units features all the latest upgrades and high quality materials for assembly.
Below is the breakdown of the Performance 4L80E build. The unit is disassembled, each part carefully inspected and clearances are measured to meet our specifications not just the maximum clearance allowed by GM. The case is carefully inspected, cleaned and re-inspected.

Then it is coated with a special heat and oil resistant paint making for a very tough finish and a clean look. The intermediate clutch sprag consists of an extreme duty intermediate sprag and roller assembly with specially prepared race and spiral ring, to prevent high RPM snap ring release.
The forward and direct clutch friction plates are replaced with heavy duty performance friction plates. The drums are then modified to accept additional friction plates and the apply area it self is altered to allow use of the entire piston area for apply in the forward drum.
But durability is significantly increased. For the intermediate, direct and overdrive clutches we use the Raybestos Stage 1 Performance Friction Plates. The intermediate overrun band is replaced with a heavy duty unit. This is mostly valuable in heavy duty truck applications, since this band is used to hold back when the transmission is manually put into 2nd gear while descending steep grades, etc.
It will hold up significantly better to engine braking. The Pump is carefully inspected and reconditioned for maximum durability and pressure. Special modifications are made to increase cooling and planetary lubrication. Our own PerformaBuilt shift kit is installed in the valve body. This kit is custom set to the type of unit purchased.
Each unit comes with a PerformaBuilt warranty according to the terms listed on our warranty page. Please note our Warranty page.
This transmission comes with a 1 Year Warranty. If you purchase a torque converter from us you will automatically get the 2 Year Warranty Upgrade. All units are available in either 2wd or 4X4. The 4L80E transmission is the advanced progeny of the legendary TurboHydramatic TH automatic transmission, and is based heavily on the in both parts and strength, yet featuring an added overdrive gear, a lock-up torque converter and advanced electronic controls. This article also covers a variant of the 4L80E - the 4L85E, which is built to handle even heavier-duty use, and all references to the 4L80E apply to it unless otherwise mentioned.
Readers may also note that the 4L80 and 4L85 terms are sometimes used without the "E" suffix, as all GM automatics are now electronically controlled and therefore in no need of differentiation. The 4L80 nomenclature denotes that the transmission is a 4-Speed, Longitudinally mounted, and for lbs. Maximum engine input torque for the 4L80 is ft. The case is die cast aluminum. The 4L80E was designed for vehicles up to lbs.
GVWR and with engines up to ft. The 4L85 was designed for vehicles up to 16, lbs. The torque converter is a fluid turbine drive and like those on its predecessor transmissions; the THC, R4, and 4L60, the 4L80 features a lock-up pressure plate for direct mechanically coupled driving from the engine crank.
The 4L80 features a mm torque converter. The transmission typically accepts a 6. It features a dry weight of lbs. Like earlier automatics, the 4L80 features one line pressure tap available for testing and diagnostic purposes. They also feature transmission cooling ports for highly-recommended external transmission oil coolers. The TH was so enduring at GM and other marques, that it was actually the last hold-out of the old-school automatics without a lock-up torque converter or overdrive.
The R4 was a pretty tough transmission, but not quite in the class of the TH GM needed a heavy-duty automatic overdrive. The rear tailhousing bolt pattern remained the same, but its indexing bore diameter was changed. Like the TH, the 4L80E generally featured a large 32 spline output shaft in both the various 2wd and 4wd applications.
Like the other GM automatics, the 4L80E featured a die-cast aluminum case.
GM 4L80E Automatic Transmission
Unlike the later 4L60E transmission, the 4L80E did not feature a removable bellhousing, but an integrated bellhousing with only the Chevrolet 90 degree engine bolt pattern being available.
Though not entirely without glitches, the 4L80E was essentially successful and the transmission continued to be improved throughout its production span, with incremental changes entering as available. The 4L85 transmission was introduced in Some of the differences included a 5-pinion output gearset and 5-pinion reaction gearset. Though not a transmission development change, in GM specified a new transmission fluid formulation and required its use for warranty in the 4L80 series.
Dexron VI superceded previous transmission fluids with claims of improved transmission performance and greater transmission and fluid life. Like the TH, the 4L80E is intended to operate between the duty range of the 4L60E and the Allison series transmissions, and prior to the current high-powered light-duty series truck diesel revolution, Allison transmissions were essentially only used in the medium-duty class series trucks.
In fact, prior to the advent of the GM Gen. As with its TH predecessor, the 4L80 transmission found its way not only into significant GM applications, but also into luxury marques, including Jaguar, Rolls Royce, Bentley, and Aston Martin, as well as less glorious vehicles such as school buses and motor homes.Mega Monster Transmissions Engineered to Dominate, the 4L80EMega Monster transmission is tough enough to withstand the rigors of even the toughest street machines delivering tire-spinning shifts race after race.

Transmission Flush - Dr. Write a Review. Add to Wish List. Follow Us. Got a 4L80E transmission from Monster, thing came in great, packaged well. Very clean, actually kind of cool looking. Went in perfectly, everything hooked right up like it's supposed to, everything was good. Packaging was excellent and let me tell you pulled about lbs with my Suburban last weekend, gonna do it again this weekend. And no problems, smooth power, good crisp shifts.
Everything's great, really appreciate it guys. Thank you much. Hey, there. It was running great until about miles and my transmission started slipping, so i've been looking around and I heard about Monster transmission, and that they have very great service.
The transmission is great, it's flawless, shifts perfectly, everything that I wanted. I went for the factory shift kit because its just my DD but it shifts better than my old one ever did.
The best part is it has reverse, which my old one did not I like the fact that they test it before they ship it. Id do it the same if I had to and definately reccomend Monster trans.
If my trans was a total loss I may have gone elsewhere to get up and running sooner. Ill put 5 stars but should be 4 because of lead time. Overall a good experience. I haven''t had a single problem or leak. I installed it into my RV 1 ton van.Designed for longitudinal engine configurations, the series included 4 forward gears. It was an evolution of the Turbo-Hydramaticfirst produced in October It was also adopted by Rolls Royce in and modified after extensive testing, and used initially in the Bentley Continental R, and subsequently other Rolls Royce and Bentley vehicles.
By activating and deactivating the solenoids in a predetermined pattern by the PCM, 4 distinct gear ratios can be achieved. The shift solenoid pattern, also sometimes referred to as solenoid firing order, is as follows. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. This article needs additional citations for verification.
